Chinese Gooseberry, Kiwi, Kiwi Fruit

Actinidia chinensis, often known as Chinese Gooseberry or Kiwi, is a fruiting vine and medicinal plant native to China, found predominantly in the northern Yangtse river valley. The species thrives in thickets, oak forests, and light secondary forests. Known for its highly nutritional and edible fruits, Actinidia chinensis is the parent of the kiwi fruits we commonly consume today. The fruits, stems, and roots of this vine have been used in traditional medicine, treatment for urinary stones, rheumatoid arthralgia, and cancers of the liver and esophagus. Remarkably, the species is pollinated by bees and its fruit size is directly influenced by the number of fertilized seeds. The species, however, may extend 30 feet in all directions, making it unsuitable for small spaces unless pruned annually. While it initially found prominence in New Zealand's commercial markets, today, kiwi fruits are cultivated extensively in Italy, Chile, France, and the United States. Importantly, kiwi fruits are rich in Vitamin C and contain around 10% total sugars, offering significant health benefits.
