Commercial electronic equipment and household appliances commonly use wire-to-board connectors as well.

The specific application requirements will dictate the style of connector selected, as there are no standardized wire-to-board connector designs. Depending on the manufacturer, some connectors boast low-profile mating suitable for tight spaces and various locking mechanisms such as friction locks, full locks, or quick disconnects. Others may utilize a locking bar or snap-fit connection to ensure that the wire remains securely in place. While many connectors are surface-mounted to the board, others feature pins that pass through the board and are soldered on the opposite side.

Wire-to-board connectors are characterized by several specifications such as housing size, materials, the number of contacts, stacking height (the height of the connector measured from the circuit board), contact lengths, and rows of contacts.
