Find the Right PTO Shaft

Choosing the right PTO shaft is vital for the effective transfer of power from the tractor to various implements or machines. Both the size and the PTO driveline series are critical factors in making the right selection.

Incorrect measurements can lead to damage not only to the PTO shaft but also to the tractor and the equipment being used. In such cases, it may become necessary to replace various components of the PTO shaft such as tubing, U-joints, and yokes.

With an abundance of PTO shafts and parts available in the market, the task of finding the right unit can seem overwhelming. However, PaulB Parts simplifies this process by providing useful advice and guidance on selecting the correct PTO components that will seamlessly integrate with your equipment. This article outlines essential tips for choosing PTO parts tailored to your needs, supported by vast resources and the expertise of our knowledgeable staff.

PTO Shaft Selection Tips

Identifying the appropriate PTO shaft for your tractor is essential for keeping your equipment running smoothly. Follow these tips to ensure you find the perfect match on your first attempt.

1. Verify If Your Driveline is North American

The initial step in identifying the correct PTO driveline is determining whether it follows North American or metric specifications. This can be easily discerned by examining the shape of the driveline’s tubing. North American PTO drivelines often come in four common shapes: square, round, rectangular, or splined.

If the driveline resembles a lemon, star, or has three lobes, it is likely metric, with lemon and star shapes typically corresponding to German series PTO shafts and tri-lobe profiles indicating Italian series shafts.

2. Accurately Measure the Required Components

Next, it is important to take precise measurements from the U-joint located on the tractor or the drive end of the PTO. This includes:

• Measuring the bearing cap diameter: Since most U-joints have standardized cap diameters, it’s advisable to measure all caps to ensure accuracy, particularly for Constant Velocity drivelines.

• Measuring the cross-kit width and cap-to-cap length: For accurate measurements, the U-joint should be measured from the end of one cap to the end of the opposite cap. For the best results, remove the cross-kit from the yokes before measuring.

Keep in mind that various series may differ in width, so measuring the cross kit in both directions will provide the most reliable data.

3. Examine Existing Equipment for Specifications

Identify the location of the snap ring; if it is housed in the bushing, it is classified as an internal snap ring. Alternatively, if it is situated in the yoke ears, it is an external snap ring. You should also take note of the bearing diameter, cap-to-cap total length, and the type of snap ring. Additionally, knowing the torque and horsepower requirements for your PTO shaft is crucial—overlap of at least 6 inches should be maintained between male and female parts for effective torque load. If uncertain, consulting the owner’s manual can provide clarity.

Proper care of your existing equipment is key to ensuring longevity. If equipment is stored outdoors, remove the PTO shaft and keep it indoors to guard against moisture exposure, which can lead to rust.

Purchase a PTO Shaft Compatible with Your Tractor

Several considerations should be taken into account when acquiring a PTO shaft. Post-purchase, it may be necessary to modify the shaft to fit your tractor correctly, potentially necessitating cutting the driveline to achieve the proper operational overlap. Caution must be exercised to avoid damaging your equipment during this process, with a recommended overlap of one-third between the shaft and tube. If using a slip-sleeve, an overlap of approximately 3 inches should suffice.
