I recently purchase a Kubota . I will soon be changing the transmission fluid and the front gear oil for the front wheel
drive. The manual recommends 80 - 90 weight gear oil or UTD transmission fluid as gear oil for the front axle.
Which is best? Any suggestions?

Plowboy, this has been something of a puzzle to me since the two lubricants the manual recommends are so different (same recommendation in my B manual). However, it appeared to me that the original oil in mine was UDT; definitely not 80W-90 gear oil, so that's what I decided to keep in it when I changed it. ....

Seems strange to me too, but maybe there's a chance that the viscosities of gear oil and UDT are similar at operating temperatures. Actually, the stories I hear about some old farm tractors using gear oil in the hydraulic system seem stranger--hard for me to imagine. I think I'd go with the recommended UDT if for no other reason than to avoid keeping a bucket of gear oil around. Keeping just a quart for topping up PTO gearboxes is all of the stuff I want.

When I change the front axle oil on my Ford , I use NH 134D as recommended or equivalent. I've noticed that it does take the fairly thin 134D awhile to get from the axle fill point into the final reduction gear cases on the axle housing ends. Gear oil would take much longer. I'm not sure other tractors are like this, but it's a pretty good idea to keep track of how much oil drains out and to make sure about that much goes back in. The reduction gear case drains can be checked to make sure that some oil has reached the assemblies, and the dip stick on the axle housing should be checked after a short period of operation.

I faced the same dilemna with my L. I asked my dealer what he recommended - 80/90 gear oil. His reason - it's tackier than Super UDT and the front end is strickly oil bath lubrication. Also less than half the price.... ....

It's interesting to note that the old tractors were far from the fit's of machined metal that is mass produced today. That is one of the possible differences of the recommended oils. If you do have a small weep it might not with 80-90 oil in it. I also would question the use of the gear oil for a lubricant if it was to be used below 0. ....

Art, are you saying 80/90 wt gear oil doesn't lubriucate below zero? My blower runs that in the gear box - no problems in 3 years of heavy use with many days below zero. 80/90 is also used in truck transmissions and differentials. Heck the model A's use a 600 weight gear oil, (closer to grease...). ....

The point I was trying to make was about the pour point. A 90wht oil isn't going thru the same hole as a 20 wht oil. I think thru the years I have had a chance to see nearly all oils used for one purpose or another. There are many other factors to consider when choosing a oil for lubricating. ....
