A product that lives up to its claims.
About two years ago, I moved into a townhome I had been renting out for several years. I discovered that the tenants, two college-age boys, had moved in (against lease terms) and were chronic smokers (also against lease terms). Fortunately, they confined themselves to the master bedroom and bathroom, but they left significant damage beyond the deposit over three years. The odor was horrendous, and even after painting and replacing the carpet, the stench lingered. I got a quote from ServPro for about $2700, which was unaffordable at the time. I noticed in the quote that they would use ozone generators. I was already familiar with the technology, having used it before.
Unfortunately, ozone generators have been illegal in CA since 2017, because CA knows what's best for us. Apparently, people can't read warnings and would sit in a room with these running. Or more likely, legislators have invested stock in ServPro and other smoke damage experts who benefit from this law. So, I bought the machine and had it shipped to a friend in TX, who then forwarded it to me.
In a 20x15x10 room, I ran the machine for about 12-14 hours and then again in the bathroom (the worst) for another 12 hours. It was amazing. It smelled springtime fresh, and the odors never came back. The light fixtures were still yellow, but that was an easy fix! Since then, I have lent the machine to realtor friends dealing with pet odors, smokers, and general mildew smells in laundry rooms and garages. Cat urine is a category all by itself, but in all cases, the machine did its job.
Recently, I moved into another vacated property and ran the machine in the garage for a few hours. I had already bug-bombed the place a few weeks earlier. There were dead spiders everywhere, and the wet, mildewy smell was gone (apparently, the tenants disliked closing windows and doors during rainstorms).
Pros:
- Oxidizes all organic matter (smoke, mildew, pet dander, pet urine, bugs, mice, etc.)
- Compact size
- Powerful
- Inexpensive
- Harmless to foodstuffs etc.
Cons:
- No filter
- No replaceable grid
- Only oxidizes organic compounds/matter, not chemically caused odors
- Illegal in CA and possibly other states
- Must vacate area and air out before returning
- Can possibly break down plastics, rubber, foam, etc., with overuse
Do you have teens active in sports? You don't have to buy all kinds of odor-masking laundry products for their room or clothes. Hang their gear in a garage, sealed closet, or laundry room and turn it on. Place it in their room while they’re at practice. Is the cat box stinking up the place? Did the puppy make a mess on the carpet? Clean it, then run this machine for a couple of hours. Inherited Uncle Bob’s Plymouth Roadrunner, but he smoked cigars— a lot? Put this machine in the car and run it for a few hours. Problem solved. Got spiders in the garage? Ants? This machine handles icky bugs quickly. As of 8/7/21, Shawn Wood (on YouTube) who hosts Moustrap Monday will be testing to see if these either kill mice/rats or, more likely, irritate them enough to drive them away. I’ll update once he tests this out. So far, he’s eliminated a yellow jacket nest, which is impressive.
If there’s a downside (besides potential overuse breaking down plastics), it’s that you need to allocate time to use it. That includes time to air out a room. You’ll need to plan ahead. Ensure the kids won’t be coming in, and there’s time to air out (with fan assistance if needed) so that people and pets will be safe. Plus, it smells so good afterward! Like after a rainshower/thunderstorm.
Are there better machines in terms of longevity and design? Some are designed for longer use with replaceable parts and are thus more costly. When I bought this, I wasn’t sure it would work. However, I’d buy the exact same machine again. I’ve used it many times, lent it out numerous times, and it has never failed. Unless I need to handle a very large space and am pressed for time, I’m not sure what the advantages of a larger machine would be. I’m very satisfied and think you will be too if this is what you need. So, do I recommend it? Without hesitation, 5 stars.
