When considering which type of crusher is best for your needs, it is essential to focus on the various types available rather than just the manufacturer's name. The primary types of crushers are Jaw Crushers, Impact Crushers, Cone Crushers, and Shredders. Understanding the material you need to crush and the desired particle size is crucial to determining which technology fits your application best.

Hard Rock:

For hard rock, jaw crushers are often recommended as primary crushers to break the rock into smaller pieces (about 3-4 inches), and then a cone crusher can further reduce it to a desired size. Some operations choose to use only a primary crusher that feeds into a screening plant for separation of products.

However, it’s important to note not all jaw crushers handle hard rock effectively. Many smaller jaw crushers are designed for softer materials like concrete, block, or brick, not for hard rock. Be cautious if considering modifying your jaw crusher's settings, as this can lead to quicker wear and reduced production efficiency.

Concrete / Concrete Block / Brick:

For crushing concrete, blocks, or brick, you generally have three options: jaw crushers, impact crushers, or recycling shredders. Factors such as dust generation, the desired end product's size, and the presence of contaminants like rebar can influence your choice.

The shredder technology has become increasingly popular for its efficiency in handling these materials, particularly given its ability to reduce dust generation and effectively deal with rebar without extensive prep work. Although jaw crushers also work well, they can produce more dust and might not be suitable for high-temperature asphalt applications.

Asphalt:

Typically, impact crushers are favored for asphalt because they can achieve high production levels, but they wear out quickly and require frequent maintenance. In comparison, shredders like the CAMS Shredder are also preferred due to lower costs and their ability to process larger chunks of material with less prepping.

It is crucial to analyze the crushing stage and choose the right type of crusher that fits your specific requirements.
