Everything You Need To Know To Find The Best Collets & R8 Tooling
R8 Collet Set What Should I Buy????
Keep your eye on ebay , If you buy a 16th set now from shars or elsewhere , you can find 32nd's sometimes cheap on ebay if you needed . A 20mm is also a good one to have , sometimes you see some good ebay deals on a tool but it's 20mm metric .
Sometimes when you run out of "Z" room , you need to put a drill in a collet , or even a stubby drill in a collet to do the job , And that drill (by murphy's law) will be a 32nd or 64th) A 1/2-13 needs a 27/64 drill ... i've ran out of Z room and had to do this use that collet. There's only a few others that fall on a 32nd or 64th , I see them on ebay cheap from time to time ....a whole 32 or 64 set will cost alot though .
Looking back , I think I would have gone with an ER32 instead of the drill chuck ...more range , a little more Z room... idk ...I hold end mills in the collets too

R8 Collet chuck, choices
My mills an R8 3 hp step pulley and I get the variable speed with a decent VFD. I bought a full set of Bison ER 40 collets and there chuck knowing all too well the 40 size was too large for anything used in a R8 spindle. But I also wanted dual usage from the collets a real professional probably wouldn't bother with and they'd just use 5C on there lathes instead. If your not trying to hog material to the limits of a R8 spindle the ER's work fine.Holding drills far more rigidly and with less runout than even an Albrecht can is just one extra that's nice to have with decent ER's.And yes the collet chuck and closing nut are a bit large sometimes. Actual R8 collets are the most rigid and would give the most tool clearance obviously.I also own Emco ESX 25'S, a set of offshore ER 32,and 20's. Maybe some off shore sets are ok, but it's a real crap shoot what you'll really get. There's zero comparison between the offshore sets I have and those Emco's and Bison's. As there should be considering the price difference. If I wanted decent and since you've already scored a good collet chuck and the price was secondary I'd buy Bison collets as a minimum. No hands on with them, but I can't recall any complaints about whatever Maritool sells so they might be just as good. I'd bet there's some here who use Franks collets and can say for sure.
