There are several reasons why ceramic flap discs are superior. Firstly, the ceramic grit does not conduct heat to the bonding agent, preventing it from melting the adhesive that holds the abrasive in place, as conventional flap discs do. Additionally, when the grit shatters, it leaves behind sharp broken edges, which continuously renew the cutting surface until the disc is completely worn out. This leads to excellent stock removal from start to finish. We have observed that reducing the RPM of the grinder by 20-30% can further extend the life of the disc without sacrificing cutting speed. (This is applicable only if you have a variable speed grinder, of course.)
Although ceramic discs may be priced at double the cost of good-quality aluminum oxide or zirconium discs, they typically last four to five times longer, provide faster stock removal, and result in reduced downtime for changing out worn discs. Therefore, they can be a financially sound investment. It is surprising that more people do not utilize them.
