Suggestions on Small Dredge

If I were in your situation, I would recommend starting with a used dredge. Opt for a 3-inch dredge with an air compressor option, or consider purchasing a new pump with air while waiting to get floats to save money. You can always add the floats when you actually need them. Several years ago, I dredged in Ohio with the Ohiogoldprospectors by using my 2-inch Proline dredge, which was easier to handle. Initially, I had a 4-inch AVA but decided against dragging it around. I once had the chance to buy a friend's 2.5-inch Proline with air but didn't, and I've regretted the missed opportunity since. Unfortunately, age has caught up with me, making it difficult to use now. If you are planning to dredge alone, a smaller dredge would be more advantageous; however, dredging solo is not recommended for safety reasons. I had a fantastic time at the Swank claim, meeting many wonderful people.

COLREGS Question - Professional Mariner Forum

We recently took delivery of a small dredge to maintain a private channel.

A diesel engine powers the hydraulic pump and winch but does not propel the vessel. We use a jon boat with an outboard motor as a support vessel to move the dredge to the work site. Once at the site, the dredge is positioned using anchors and wire rodes controlled by PTO winches, with their locations marked by floats. Although the dredge is anchored, it still moves.

My question is: While working, the dredge is restricted in its ability to maneuver. Should we be displaying conventional RAM day shapes and lights, or those indicating an anchored barge?

PS: The dredge was delivered without any day shapes or lights. This wouldn't be an issue if there was no traffic, but the channel is used by homeowners to transit in and out of a harbor, and through a series of canals on a small island administered by an HOA.
