Pink Anti-Static Bags or ESD Shielding Bags?

Okay, we&#;ll say this only one more time&#; Pink Poly Anti-Static Bags are not ESD bags!

The broadly-used references of items being of &#;Anti-static&#; or &#;Static-Shielding&#; are mutually exclusive terms and require some definition. Many online dictionaries even wrongly suggest these terms up as close synonyms, but in fact, there are major differences between anti-static and static-shielding materials, and many cheap online sellers on platforms like eBay & Amazon confuse the issue by a distinct lack of product knowledge. So please allow us to reiterate&#;

If you want to learn more, please visit our website Yuanlong Packaging.

Antistat&#;s Pink Anti-Static Bags have the ability to dissipate a static charge to ground preventing static charge building up on the package or device within the bags. The material is also antistatic and will not charge up when rubbed against other materials and these bags can be used to safely package/transport your non-ESD sensitive devices within your ESD protected area. Pink Antistatic Bags are formed using blow-molded LDPE polyethylene with unique antistatic additives but critically they have no shielding ability. A static field or discharge occurring outside the bag could penetrate the bag and damage electronics inside. The material itself will not generate or hold a triboelectric charge, so it won&#;t be a carrier that introduces static into a static controlled environment. So to summarize, these materials do not protect from electrostatic discharge (ESD).

So to summarize, these materials do not protect from electrostatic discharge (ESD).

Static Shield Bags, however, are the perfect solution for protecting sensitive electronic products or equipment from electrostatic discharge (ESD) during storage and transit. The 4-layer construction we produce protects against charges inside and outside the bag and are specially produced by our precision engineering team to have a surface resistance of 108 &#; Ω The bags create a metal &#;Faraday cage&#; layer that shields products from electric energy inside and prevents static build-up. The inner layer is a static dissipative polyethylene surrounded by a layer of aluminium shielding. The mid-layer is made of polyester, with an outer layer made of a static dissipative coating. Unlike anti-static bags, static-shielding bags protect components from static charges both inside and outside of the bag.

They are used for safe storage of PCBs, integrated circuits, motherboards, computer components and used and trusted by thousands of high-end electronic and engineering companies all over the world, we have been producing these bags since and have been working with major defense and aerospace organisations globally for over 30 years.

Antistat also many produce custom sizes and printed logos or copy are available on request, although minimum order quantities may apply. These ESD safe bags are RoHS compliant and as well as being an ISO- company, Antistat are also platinum members of the EOS/ESD Association. If you are not shipping or storing electronic components or items that can be damaged by static, but your products could be shipped to an area that is static controlled, you can safely use our pink poly, anti-static materials, in fact, for first time buyers to our online store &#; we also offer 10% off all products, when bought within the US.

We hope that&#;s clear and hopefully avoids you having a nasty shock (pun intended) when looking for cheaper alternatives, thousands of consumable products sell fantastically well online, but low-cost, poorly manufactured and often fake alternatives just won&#;t do their job in high-end electronics and technology production area. Nobody looks for cheap parachutes and our advice is the same when it comes to buying shielding or ESD protective equipment Our advice is to look beyond the low-cost price and ask yourself &#;does the seller know their ESD properties from their Shielding?. If not, the chances are the products isn&#;t fit for use either!

Please see our ESD & Shielding bags products here and let us know if you need something custom producing.

The difference between ESD anti-static pouches

When working with electronics or components that can be damaged by static charge, it is important to protect them. Components or for example a PCB can be protected against static charge by means of anti-static bags. In which situation and location you want to protect your products against static charge affects the type of bags you have to use.

At Eleshop we sell three kinds of bags:

Anti-static (Pink)

Static-shielding (Metallized)

Conductive (Black)

In this knowledge centre article we briefly explain for all types of bags in which situation you can best use them.

Anti-static (Pink)

The pink bags are anti-static bags made of polyethylene. These bags prevent the build-up of an electrical charge but do not protect the parts in the bag from electrostatic discharge. These bags are therefore only suitable for moving parts within an ESD safe area, but outside an ESD safe area these bags do not protect the parts against electrostatic charges.

Static-shielding (Metallized)

The metalized bags are made of dissipative polyester and polyethylene. These dissipative bags do not build up an electrical charge and protect the parts in the bags from electrostatic discharge. In contrast to the pink bags, these types of bags also protect the parts outside an ESD safe environment against an electrostatic (discharge) charge due to the so-called 'faraday cage' effect. Perfect for shipping products, for example! Please note that if there is a hole in such a dissipative bag, it will no longer work properly.

Conductive (Black)

Finally there are the black conductive bags. These bags are made of a conductive copolymer which provides a low electrical resistance. Basically these bags work just like the Static-shielding bags according to the 'faraday cage' effect, but because of the low resistance the electrostatic charge is discharged faster. These bags therefore also protect the contents against shocks produced by the user, the surface or other surrounding materials during transport in or to a non-ESD safe environment. In addition, these bags are non-transparent and also protected the contents from UV light.

What is an Anti-Static bag, how do they work? And why are they used with sensitive electronics?

Have you ever bought an electronic or computer component and found it wrapped in an anti-static bag and wondered why we use them? Or how do they work?

A lot of electronic components are very sensitive and are at risk of being damaged when it comes to electrostatic discharges. This static electricity can cause major damage to the internal circuitry of components or microprocessors rendering them useless or &#;fried&#;.

Tribocharging is the most common factor for the buildup of static electricity. We can define tribocharging as a form of contact electrification, this is where materials can become electrically charged when they come into frictional contact with another material.

To prevent our components from becoming damaged we use anti-static bags to help shield them from this. The two most common types of anti-static bags used are Dissipative Anti-static bags and Static-Shielding bags, however, most people will just refer to them under the umbrella term &#;Anti-static bag&#;.

Dissipative Anti-static bags:

These types of bags are made up of a polyethylene plastic material which are most commonly pink or black in colour. Polyethylene plastic does not create or hold any form of charge, this means that if the contents inside the bag move or anything externally rubs against it, the tribocharging effect does not take place so no static charge is made.

In the transport of electronics, polyethylene plastic might not only be used as bags. Polyethylene plastic is also used to create polyethylene bubble wrap and poly-foam for an added layer of protection in packaging.

However, while these bags are effective at preventing the buildup of static electricity, they will not protect the electronic components from a direct static discharge so are only be used on components that cannot be damaged by static discharges, but could be brought into an environment where the build up of a static discharge could affect more sensitive components.

Static-Shielding bags:

Being made up of multiple layers of different materials, these bags are more heavy duty and bulkier than dissipative anti-static bags. Static-Shielding bags simulate a Faraday cage effect for the electronics inside them, completely protecting them from a direct electrostatic discharge and building up static electricity. Static-Shielding bags are used for sensitive electronics that could be damaged by an electrostatic discharge.

The first (inner) layer of this bag is made up of  the same dissipative polyethylene plastic as dissipative bags which provides a soft layer for the electronic component to sit on while also preventing the buildup of static electricity that could be created by the movement of the component inside.

The second (middle) layer of this bag is made of aluminium which provides a layer of shielding against electrostatic discharges, this layer is used as a conductor to safely take a direct static charge and ground it, meaning that the  contents inside the bag remain safe.

The third (outer) layer of this bag is made up of a form of polyester with a dissipative coating similar to that found on the polyethylene plastic. This layer is used to add another layer of protection to the bag and its contents as it helps to provide protection to the middle layer and stop any buildup of static electricity on the outside of the bag.

Why Do You Need Anti-Static Bags? Edco Supply Corporation

As an electronics manufacturer, you take steps to control moisture while storing and shipping products. A drier environment helps you safeguard against mold or mildew growth that can quickly ruin your goods. However, less moisture in the air can also cause an unwanted effect &#; an increased potential for static electricity buildup and electrostatic discharge (ESD).

Why Should You Use Anti-Static Bags?

Solutions like static-shielding packaging help reduce the risks of ESD and provide multiple business benefits.

Protect Electronic Components

Many electronics rely on numerous small components to operate. Buildups within these goods can come from friction, contact, heat or pressure and result in ESD. The tiny parts are vulnerable to the rapid temperature changes ESD produces, which can swiftly translate to significant product damage.

A key anti-static bag function is its ability to prevent ESD buildups completely. These solutions are specifically designed to create and maintain a static-free environment for storing and shipping sensitive electronic goods.

Prevent Moisture and Dust Damage

Static-shielding packaging guards against more than ESD, also providing protection against moisture and dust.

Excess moisture can result in component corrosion, mineral residue and dirt retention. These substances can leave a coating on the component that may lead to overheating or short circuits. Too much dust in the storage or shipping environment can penetrate the parts and cause the same outcomes.

Using anti-static bags with your electronic products protects your business&#;s substantial investment in expensive manufacturing materials by stopping those buildups.

Reduce Damaged Goods, Refunds and Returns

Every product you ship to customers bears your company name and represents its quality. That means if customers receive damaged goods, you risk your reputation. They may choose to do business elsewhere in the future, harming your growth potential and bottom line. Your company also experiences waste and a significant financial loss if the entire stock or shipment is damaged, plus the time lost in handling customer return and refund processing.

Static-shielding bags are ideal for mitigating these risks and helping ensure your customers&#; satisfaction and product integrity.
